SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS
ANNUAL MEETING DELEGATE TO CONFERENCE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES The nineteenth annual meeting of the Gisborne branch of the South African War Veterans' Association was held' 'in Findlay's rooms on Saturday. The president, Veteran I. Lindon, presided over a good attendance of members.
The meeting opened by all standing and fraying the usual compliment to the Hate Sergeant Thomas McKay, or the Senforth Highlanders. The annual report, as published in the Herald, and the financial statement, were read, the chairman formally moving their adoption, which after a short discussion was carried. Mr. A. Walker, of the Sherbrooke Laager, Canada, wrote and enclosed a report of their annuaL reunion in May last. The number attending had fallen to eight, but they intended carrying .on until only two were left. Mr. A. G. Bechiam, Auckland, wrote with regard to the coming conference, and offered his services there should Gisborne not be sending a delegate. He aSked Gisborne to support the remit to hold the 1940 conference in Auckland. Social amt Picnic Discussion took place with regard to the social activities of the branch, and eventually it was decided to hold a social evening on the last Saturday in September instead of the monthly meeting on that date. On Labour Day in October next it was decided to again hold a picnic and shoot, on the Mangapapa rifle range, ladies to be specially invited. A social committee was set up consisting of Veteran P. Brady and' Mrs. Brady, and Veteran W. Burch and Mrs. Burch, Mrs. I. Linden .and Mrs. J. V. Scott, with the president and 'hon. secretary. It was decided to send .the hen. secretary .as the delegate to the Dominion conference as the branch had had no direot representation at the last conference, The chanman made feeling reference to the recent deatli of MajorGeneral Sir Edward Chaytor, which was endorsed toy those present who had come into personal contact with him..
Reference was also made to the impending resignation of Mr. W. Oakdcn from the secretaryship of the R.S.A. and wishing him every success in his new sphere. It was considered his place would be hard to fill, and many experiences of his help and assistance rendered to members of the South African Veterans’ Association were given. Officers Elected The election of officers resulted: — President, Veteran I. Linden; vicepresidents, Veterans G. Crawshaw, J. Munro, and J. T. McLoughlin, Veteran F. Collin declining nomination again but stating that he would always be available; executive, Veterans S. Breingan, W. Taylor, D. McCallum, P. Brady, J. Stokes, and W. H. Thompson; hon. secretary, Vetcraort J- V. Scott; 'hon. treasurer, Veteran F. Parker; hon. quartermaster, Veteran 11. V. Hughes; lion auditor, Mr. D. H. Faram; hon. piper, Mr. A. (McDonald; hon. chaplain. Canon A. F. Hall. The president briefly returned thanks for again being appointed to that .position. His job had been made very easy by the loyal co-operation given, him by members, and the assistance given to the association by the press, and by Mr. A. McDonald with iiis "pipes.” A vote of tbanlks was passed to the chairman and the outgoing officers. Refreshments were handed round.
