THE PAYING OFF PENNANT flying from the masthead of H.M.S. Leith at the Queen’s wharf, Wellington. In accordance with naval tradition the flag is the length of the warship (in this case 266 ft), plus one yard for each month beyond the commission period, of two years and a half.
