Government’s Policy

Sir, —In reply to “Shivering’s” letter I regret I took him seriously as one has only to read his second to see the funny side of it. He mentions that New Zealand money is scorned in any other part of the world. Evidently he has been fed some of the Opposi- * tion propaganda. I suggest he change his diet. As regards Mr. Savage being responsible for New Zealand be- ' mg on the rocks, well I think New Zealand was on the rocks before Mi Savage took office, but what he did do was to turn the tide. Yes, railway fares and freight. were increased 10 per cent, but who made it possible for us to pay that increase? Mr. Savage. The houses built by Mr. Savage’s Governmen are not for the worker, says “Shivering.” Well I know of a number of working people occupying State houses and they do not object to paying a rental of 27s to 355, especially after the exorbitant rents they had previously paid for privately-owned 'houses of a much inferior type. As regards Mr. Savage’s deal in butter this year, well all I can say is that the taxpayers’ loss is the farmers’ gain. Obviously “Shivering” is not a farmer. As to our paying Is 6’£d per pound for butter while the people at Home are only paying slightly more than Is, even though it has been transported 10,000 miles, if “Shivering” is not out of the school room or like Rip Van Winkle “just woke up” he will know that this condition has always existed, so why blame Mr. Savage for it. I think we are very lucky to be able to enjoy eating butter even at the high price of. Is 6£d. I can remember the days when we could not have enjoyed it even if it had only been slightly more than Is. SATISFIED.
