Unemployment Benefits
Sir, —Those responsible for the administration of the Social Security Act in Gisborne appear to take a delight in misleading persons eligible for its benefits. Upon registering for unemployment benefits I was told to stand down for three weeks. That as quite in order, as I am a seasonal worker and had fairly good earnings over the period taken by the act. But upon returning to the “dole" office at the end of three weeks I was informed I would not receive any benefit until the following week. making, in all, a stand-down period of one month. I was also informed that any amount I earned during my stand-down period would not affect my first weeks benefit. On presenting my card I received less than half ol what I expected because what I had earned during my stand-down period had been in the week previous to which I was eligible for benefit. My average earnings, plus sustenanc \ for tile four weeks was £1 (is 3d per week. Where now is our social security? EX-LABOURITE.
