ROSE BOWL REGAINED POVERTY BAY’S WIN HAWKE’S BAY DEFEATED MARGIN OF TWO GOALS A large attendance of soccer enthusiasts was treated to a thrilling and skilful exhibition of Association football at the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday, when Poverty Bay met Hawke’s Bay in tiro annual challenge match for the East Coast Rose Bowl. After a keen, hard-fought and very even tussle, the local representatives emerged the victors by five goals to three. Both teams gave creditable performances, and the visitors, although beaten, were equal to Poverty Bay in every respect. The combination in the forward lines was very impressive. while the feature of the de tensive play was spectacular kick[j)O t The home team won the toss, and following the kick-off the Hawke's Bay forwards began to press with earnest. Rigby opened hostilities with a hard ground shot, which Silvester blocked and cleared for his own men to get under way. Pretty combination by the Poverty Bay inside forwards gave A. Waught a chance, but his shot failed.
Opportunities to Score The ’ attackers were conceded further opportunities to score a moment later, when a visiting back miskieked th o ball, and an awkward situation arose for his side. Good backing up by Bryan, however, saw him relieve the pressure with a welldirected kick to his forwards, who immediately resumed the offensive. They attacked vigorously, and finally their persistent efforts were rewarded, when the home goalie failed to completely gather in a ball, Hughes sweeping it from bis 'feet and, into the net: Hawke’s Bay 1, Poverty Bay The scarlet forwards attacked, but when it seemed inevitable that they should score an obstruction intervened and a penalty was awarded them Bridge took .the kick, which was saved by Varman. Poverty Bay returned to the attack, and. Burns centred nicely from the right wing for Dunsmore to shoot around the post. An abortive comer followed, and ben Hawke’s Bay retaliated, but ,-ere repulsed -through excellent deence work. The local goal was nder -further threat, however, when ,igby secured the ball to come h-rough on his own and narrowly '.issed with a, low drive. Play took a turn as Dunsmore, with i nice run down the left, set the ball down -in the visitors’ territory. An ensuing scrimmage gave McGrory possession, and! he lobbed it to Bridge or the latter to send in an unbeat•bie shot, which evened the scores. A series of attacks and counter- . Attacks followed, and then Waugh made an opening for Bridge, who was ueeessful in adding further to the Poverty Bay team’s goal -tally. Halftime came a moment later with the score still: Poverty Bay 2, Hawke’s Bay 1. The Second Half On resumption, Poverty Bay a-t----acked. tout wem -sent, back toy Bryan, . hereupon pressure was applied to he Poverty Bay goal. A bad moment ccurred when Appleby miskieked, a, following tricky play by Gibson -id Hughes, Silvester saved spier) - idly -fr,om -tire latter. Further atempibs were made to score, with .ibson prominent, and a shot from his player saw Silvester bring off mother marvellous save. Onslaughts were then conducted on che visitors’ -goal, and a movement in.olving Bridge, McGrory and Burns menaced but proved fruitless. Anocher move was instigated by a pass from Mulrooney to Waugh, who sent it on to Bridge. Two difficult shots severely tested Vannan, whose brilliant saving was warmly applauded. Poverty Bay increased thei r efforts and were given an opportunity when in opponent was penalised for hands. W. 'Mulrooney made no mistake with the kick. Poverty 'Bay 3, Hawke’s Bay 1. Hawke’s Bay Retaliate Following play in midfieid, Burns broke away and centred to Bridge, .vho again found Vannan on the alert. A subsequent corner-kick was directed to McGrory, and on this occasion the goalie was caught off his guard by a shot well out of his reach. The Hawke’s Bay forwards then shot into prominence with fine passing movements. Mackey had a try which the Gisborne goalkeeper checked, but dropped foi Gibson, who had followed in last, to find the back of the net.
In support of this achievement they continued to attack, and a third goal was allotted them by chance, when J. Watt, Poverty Bay, miskieked the ball into his own net. —Poverty Bay 4, Hawke’s Bay 3. Finding themselves so challenged, the local players became more determined in their endeavour to score and excellent team work eventually reaped reward, when Bridge notched an additional point just before the final whistle, and the game ended: Poverty Bay 5, Hawke’s Bay 3. The curtain-raiser game between a High School team and the primary school representatives resulted in a draw, both sides scoring three goals.
