SHOCK FOR MANAWATU
ASHBURTON’S SUCCESS COMFORTABLE MARGIN (Por rrcss Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. Manawatu, who are aspjring lo lift the Ranfurly Shield when on a tour of the South Island, were defeated on Saturday by Ashburton by 24 points to 10. Manawatu seldom looked like winning, though a fact, which must not be lost sight of is that the Manawatu selector chose nine players who had not previously represented the union this season, making the match a native test prior to the seletcion of the touring side. The Manawatu forwards were slightly superior, McKenzie, the Ah Black, being the best on the field. The Ashburton inside backs broke through time and again. Fergus and Kelly being the most dangerous, supported by the loose forward Harrison, who played like a back. The ex-Can-terbury * full-,back, Bchrns, played faultlessly, his line-kicking gaining more than half the field. The Ashburton points came from four converted tries and a field goal Manawatu’s points included a field goal, an unconverted try. and a penalty.
