Cellic 14 Three field goals were scored in the H.5.0.8. -Celtic senior game in Gisborne on Saturday, two being kicked by Celtic players and Ihe third by a H. 5.0.8. back. The ex-students came with a late run in this game and gradually whittled away the Celtic lead to win by two points. Each side included a few junior players, all ol whom gave good displays. McKinley’s Open Score Celtic early built up a good lead. Reg. McKinley soon scoring a typical opportunist try and Jack McKinley adding to this with a field goal, the first of a trio in this game. Both sets of forwards were working hard, with Baker doing good work in the green pack. Play was fast, Celtic being next to score when Baker crossed the line for an unconverted try, the score at half-time being Celtic 10. H. 5.0.8. 0.
In tiie second spell the speedy maroon backs commenced to get thei) share of the ball and hammered awnv at Celtic, finally breaking the green.' down.
Lack of penetration was telling against the old students' hacks and it was left to the forwards, led by Johnson and McGufile, to bring the side within striking distance, where Gardner opened the scoring for his side with a penalty goal from half-way.— Celtic 10. IT.S O B 3.
A little later the maroons further whittled away Celtic’s lead when Gemmell led a dribbling rush and J Short went over to finish ofl' the movement with an unconverted try. — Celtic 10. H. 5.0.8. G.
The Celtic pack commenced to speed things up a ibit and kept, the maroons on the defensive, Morrison being prominent in this respect, liaising the siege temporarily, H. 5.0.8. took play down field, where Morrison sent Harris over for a try in tiie corner, Gardner missing the kick at goal.-—Celtic 10, H. 5.0.8. 0. The last points went to Celtic when Brian Malone kicked the third fiel goal of the clay, the final score being H. 5.0.8. IG, Celtic 14. The referee was Mr. A. E. Ingram.* close fo scoring,# but C. Anderson saved the day in a solo break-througn. Shanks, the white hooker, came oil with a leg injury and was replaced by Summersby. Wyn. Smiler Again Keeney sent his backs away again and, lighting well down the left wing. Marists were rewarded when V/. Smiler crossed the line to score well out, O’Brien missing a difficult kick at goal.—Marist IG, Old oßys G. Old Boys appeared unlucky when Moughan kicked behind his own line and Hoy forced, the referee allowing a drop-out. Littler went close wit!) a penalty and shortly afterwards a Marist forward was ordered oil’, leaving the side one short. Old Boys wore taking a turn on the attack and threatening the Marist line, but Wrightson and O’Brien forced play downliold
Phillips broke through in a sold rush for Hie whites, but' Marist saved tn a period of heated play, a forward on each side was warned .the referee making the men shake hands. Moughan, the Marist full-back, made a nice rim up the right wing to place iho side on attack, and Maoist kept up tiie pressure. T. Smiler end 'Duckworth working well down the (iank. The last points came from a penally by Littler, the match ending will) Marist winning tire game and the championship by 1G points to f). The referee was Mr. K. R. Waite.
