COMPETITION GAMES

GISBORNE BASKETBALL ST. MARY’S AND SCHOOL A INITIAL MEETING After being 10 goals in arrears, High School A made a late rally in Saturday’s A grade basketball match against St. -Mary’s A and carried their score to within three goals of their opponents’ tally. The game was the most exciting contest witnessed on the Victoria Domain courts during the afternoon, and the greater experience of the St. Mary’s players proved a deciding factor in the closing stages. That was the first occasion on which the two teams had met in the Poverty Bay Basketball Association’s championship series for the season, and it was one of a number of second round fixtures. St. Mary's and High School have to play a further game shortly to fulfil an engagement held over from the first round. School did not. start well, but later in the match showed something of their recent good form. At half-time the score was 10 goals to five in St. Mary’s favour, and shortly afterwards the winners had a lead of 15 goals to five. Then High School scored seven goals in succession, but St. Mary’s mainly staved off their attacks in the last few minutes to win by 17 goals to 14. In another A grade match Huia lost by the small margin of three goals when they met Tuis, joint leaders of the grade with H.S.O.G. Al. The other games in that division were decided by comfortable margins. Practices are to be held by the A and B grade representative teams at the association’s courts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 7 p.m. A number of inter-district fixtures are in view, and the first will be held on August 12, when an Opotiki representative side and an Opotiki club team will visit Gislborne, as well as a club team from Napier. At a date yet to be arranged, the Poverty Bay senior representatives will defend the Robson Cup against Wairoa. SATURDAY'S SCORES A Grade St. Mary’s A 17, High School A 14. Marathon 20, H.S.O.G.
