CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CLUB STEEPLES TO PADISHAH AUSSIE RA’S HURDLES POWER, CHIEF’S FATE (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The weather was fine but dull for the Christchurch Hunt Club s meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. Power Chief, one of the ruling favourites for the Grand National Steeplechase, fractured his pelvis and had; to be destroyed when lie fell :n the Homeby Steeples. This was particularly bad luck for his North Island owner.- Mr. F. Armstrong. as Power Chief had been iun-ner-up in the Great -Northern and Wellington Steeplechases and looked as though he would be difficult to beat in the big Riccarton race. He was a six-year-old brown gelding by Tractor from Asterism, and was trained by Mrs. A. W. McDonald aAwapuni. . . Redolent had to be destroyed when he broke his back during the running of the Lawford Steeplechase. Results: — Hunt Cup Steeplechase, of £SO; 2 miles. —1 Newly Rich. 11.0 (Mr. W. D. Westenra), 1; 2 Guapo,' IT.'I (Mr. T. D. Rutherford), 2 : 3 Hostage, 11.0. 3. Fifteen lengths. Hostage, the only other starter, fell, but was later remounted and finished third. Time, 4.8.
