AUSSIE RA’S WIN NATIONAL PROSPECT TRAINER’S EXPERIENCE PREPARED GOOD JUMPERS Bv “Trenton" The success of Aussie Ra on Saturday is likely to bring him into serious consideration for the Grand National Hurdles. This was his first start since an impressive win at Marton. p. Jonnston, who now trains Aussie xta, snouid have a fair idea of what as. required .of. a. horse .to succeed .oyei iiurdles, .as .he .was . associated with the preparations of such great jumpers as Muscatel, Dummy, and Battleaxe. xle is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest old-time riders over fences, and at the time it is worth noting he. was opposed by fine horsemen in the O’Connell brothers, Frank Lind, Jack Cameron, W. Clarke, G. Hope, A. Ellingham, H. Moore, and a host of .others. A few years back Johnston did well with Income,, but he has not- been in the limelight of recent years, and should Aussie fta go,on to victory in the Grand National Hurdles at. Riccarton the success would be very popular A Consistent Hack Liberal’s Mint has raced consistently this season. He commenced by accounting for the Trial Stakes at Stratford in April, and after being unplaced in his next two starts was second to Nati% r e Song in the Borough Handicap and won the Farewell Handicap ai •Vanganui. Coliricamps beat him at Otaki. but he was again successful at Marton. His sire Mint Leaf, is by Catmint from Potona. Mint Leaf was raced by W. Emeny, for whom E George trained at New Plymouth. A Hardy Gelding Nightcalm apparently thrives <>u racing as his appearance does not suggest that he has raced 18 times this season, most of his starts being in recent months. A four-year-old bay gelding by Night Raid from Sweet Memory, trained by C. Emerson, Nightcalm can best be described as a big little horse. He proved himself one of the best open class sprinters at Riccarton, being a smart beginno*and always running an honest race Nightcalm won £920 this season, the result of five wins, including a deadheat, six seconds and one third. Af present being prepared for the Winter Cup. Nightcalm is in splendid order, and though he has reached the stage where weight counts, he should continue to win his share of races. A Good Deal Slayer, who won two steeplechase events at the recent Wellington nicermg, was obtained by his present owner, Mr. L. C. Hazlett, in exchange for Withdrawal. Since the deal Slayer has annexed over £IOOO, but Withdrawal has only won once, though sno has been in the money on three other occasions. May Be Retired Although it has been reported that Jonathan has joined-A. Cook’s stable at Te Awamutu, there is reason to believe that the Thespian gelding has finished racing. He was a class per former over all distances. His Turn Will Come Royal King, who was narrowly beaten by Glenvane in the Rangitike. Hunt Cup at Marton, is now 12 years old. He was a useful performer on the flat a season or two ago, winning several races. He made his appear unce as a ’chaser at the recent Otaki meeting and made a very fair showing without getting into the money Won Very Easily Kaiwaka, who won the Glenmore Maiden at Marton, is a half-brother to Clarion Call and is trained by H. Dulieu at New Plymouth. His best performance previously was at Hast;ngs last month, when he ran thiru to Arcus and Tideway. He was always handily placed and ran home an easy winner. Kaiwaka is by Chief Rulei from Saxon Saint, by Hallowmas from Formless, by Multiform from Dreamt !. Saxon Saint also produced Saxony to Hunting Song, and the latter is the dam of Saxon Tor, another in Dulieu’s mhle w*ho was successful in a fivefurlong event at the recent Ota meeting. Formless is a full-sister to Bon Reve, a dual Derby winner who '.von the Great Northern Hurdles.
Smart Southern Filly The leading two-year-old at Riccarton this season is Winning Rival, a brown filly 'by Bulandshar from Rivalry, trained by H. and A. Cutis. She accounted for the McLean Stakes at Dunedin and the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton at the New Zealand Cun, meeting in November, which was hci last start, her stake money totalling <77fis. On the eve of her trip to Auckland for the summer meeting she was found to be suffering from muscular •rofible and had to be spelled. She is stated to have developed well during the time she has been off the scene and is now well advanced in her preparation for spring racing. She lcok<an excellent Oaks proposition and may also be troublesome in other three-year-old classics. First Time Unplaced. Burwood, who broke down on Saturday at the Christchurch Hunt Club’* meeting, has an interesting record ax a steeplechaser, ancl Saturday inar.ced the first occasion that he has finished out of a place this season. Bay of Plenty Owners’ Purchase A cable message from England states that Mr. C. E. Robertson, stud stock manager for Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Company, Limited, has completed the purchase for Messrs. F. J. Savage and Sons, of the Til hoe Jersey Stud, Waimana, Bay of Plenty, of the celebrated highly-bred racehorse Revelation, by Manna—winner of the Derby and Two Thousand
