WIT AKATANE P'ROPOSA LS A meeting called by the Whakat-ane Chamber of Commerce -to consider the route cf the proposed East Coast m'ain highway as it affected Whaka-fane unanimously urged that the highway should cross the W-hakatane River by a now bridge nearer the Paper Mills, run across the tidal flats and parallel with Wh'-i kata tie's main street over the hills to Ohope Beach, and thence to Op itiki. Because of Wh'akiu'ane’s lack of direct rail 'connection an adequate highway was necessary, it was stated, and the road would also serve the traffic -to Ohope Beach, the present route having recently been the scene cf fatalities.
