INCREASE DESIRED

ALLOWANCE FOR FAMILY HIGHER COST OF LIVING \ (Special to thn Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The opinion! that in view of the increased cost of living the allowances made /in respect of wife and children in assessing income tax were inadequate was expressed by the council of the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce at this week's meeting. After considerable discussion, the council decided to forward’ a remit to the Associated Chambers of Commerce to the affect that the matter of exemptions! allowed at present for wife and children, be considered with a view to an increase being made in the allowances owing to the present high cost of living. The council contended that in view of the cost of living having increased enormously the allowances made in respect of a wife and children likewise should be increased.

The view that if the present allowances were doubled they would not be too great, was expressed by Mr. J. M. .Angus, who added that he would not be surprised if a complete revision of the taxation system were brought about in the near future.
