Native Leaders to Confer A conference between leaders of the Maori people tin the Rotorua district will take place at Tunohopu, Dhinemutu, on August 5. The ActingMinister of Native Affairs, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, has been invited to attend, together with Sir Apirana Ngata, M.P., and Mr. A. F. Moncur, M.P.

Isoy Seaman’s Mishap When a wire hawser was being taken aboard the motor ship Port Dunedin as the vessel was preparing to leave Auckland for Gisborne, a deck boy suffered an injury to onchand, the thumb being caught between the wire and the windlass. The ship’s gangway was lowered t° allow the boy to be taken, ashore for casualty treatment. Exhibition Hotel Though it 'has only been building a few weeks, the framework of the Centennial Exhibition Hotel at Kilbirnie is now complete. Walls are being covered in, and it will not be long before the exterior of the building assumes something of its ultimate appearance. The hotel, a compact and modern two-storey building ol wooden construction, is already an object of considerable interest to residents and visitors to the eastern suburbs.

Scheme for Employing Crossing Men A suggestion that men should be tationed at level crossings, instead of going to the expense of erecting over-head bridges, was made at the monthly meeting of the council of t'he Wairoa Chamber of Commerce, and the suggestion .is to be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, tlhe Hon. R. Semple. If the scheme were adopted it was the opinion of the council that unemployed returned soldiers should be given preference for these jobs. Such a scheme, it was contended, would* save the country an enormous amount of money.— Special.

Telephone Progress Maintained

The demand for additional telephone connections is keeping up, despite the high total reached at the end of the last financial year, during which the greatest advance in the history of the system was recorded, bringing the total subscribers up to 157,005. In the first quarter of the current year the monthly average of new subscribers has been in excess of the figures for most months of the record year, the net gain to June 30, being 2205, after allowing for relinquishments, thus making a grand total of 159,810.

Power Supply in Wairoa Concent ait the inadequacy of the electric power in the Borough of Wairoa .was expressed at a meeting ol* he council of the Wairoa Chamber ■if Commerce on Thursday evening. The chairman, Mr. S. M. Ashburn, rfentioned' the difficulties housewives were experiendirug with electric cookers and added that the present state of affairs should be remedied. It was' decided to write to the Wairoa Borough Council with a. view to having an improvement made tin the present heating and lighting facilities, more especially the heating.—Special.

New Lighting Test Gisborne residents who passed down Gladstone road last night noticed a vast difference in the lighting between Bright street and Peel street, as a result of the installation of mercury vapour lamps, a new form of street lighting that has given excellent results. The difference in the lighting in the Peel street-Bright street section of the business area was most marked when compared with the remainder of the road, the mercury vapour lamps providing bright illumination with a light greenish tinge which lit up a street in almost the brilliance ol daylight.
