MATCHES IN POCKET
GREYMOUTH MINER FINED DANGEROUS PRACTICE (Por Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, last night. Valentine Harvey was fined £2 10s in the Magistrate’s Court this morning for having matches in his possession in the Dobson mine on July 21. Defendant said he was unaware he had matches in his pocket. Counsel for the prosecution said the miners had(been warned of the danger of such practices owing to gas in the mine. The previous prosecutions apparently had no effect. A substantial penalty w'as requested. Mr. R. Fenner,. S.M., said it should be unnecessary to impress on miners the necessity for ensuring their own safely. lie look into consideration that the defendant was young and had bnrn employed in the mine only three weeks. As a result of the dismissal c Harvey .by the nvan'ager last Frid'"*the miners refused to work and negotiations were deferred pending th result of the court proceedings.
