WOMEN’S HOCKEY

SELECTION OF TEAM PCVERTV BAY FLAYERS TO URN AM ENT J TioS U ECTB A correspondent signing himself “Sideline” has forwarded the following to the Herald:— “The selection of the Poverty Bay women’s representative hockey team to meet Napier for the Lady Carroll Shield has been announced and has caused a surprise to followers as well as players. “The selector reported at the meeting of the association that the team which defeated Walroa for the Lady Carroll Shield played exceptionally well, that he was very pleased with the display, and with one or Two Wairoa players in the team to go to tho New Zealand championship tournament they would more than hold their own. “Why all the changes in the team \- l of end tlie shield this time against Napier on August 5? The selector has dropped some players from his last, team, and eight players have been changed Ta r ifTore-"! ■ovv-T'-m j from which they are used to playing in. Half-Back Positions

“Miss Wyllie, the best centre-half wo have had for several years, has been changed to full-back to make way for a player who is not playing up to representative form and also has been playing in the forwards th ; s oaron. Tho other two half-backs are playing in their wrong positions. Miss Blanc played a fine game against Wairoa, and this season has been the outstanding full-back in the competition. She has been dropped from the team. “Mrs. Nicol has been replaced by a player who has not played for several seasons, bu' played for her club ibis season in only two games to rnv knowledge, and in one of those games she played in the backs. Mrs. Nicol. who can play in any forward position, deserves a place in the represents t've team this season for her consistently good play, and at Wairoa she was the outstanding forward, scoring two fine goals. A Suggested Team “I cannot understand why the selector has made so many changes so late in the season. I have been a spectator, and my. selection on form this season for the New Zealand tournament would be:— Goalkeeper.—Mrs. Tupara (Wpituhi). Full-backs. —Miss Blanc (Kia Tout and Miss McKay (Wairoa). Half-back I ".—Right, Miss Single (Wairoa): centre. Miss Wyllie (Hir.e- j nui): left, Miss Rich (Kia Toa). Forwards.-—Right wing, Mrs. Tanga- : hnu (I-linenui); inside right, Miss Single (Kin Ton); centre, Mrs. Nicol (Old Girls): ins ! de left. Mrs. Edwards' (Wai r oa): left wing, Mrs. Ncilson (Kia Toa). Reserve forwards. —Mrs. Lo Bas (Kin Ton) and Miss G. Ruru (To Karaka).
