SAKHALIN BLOCKADE
JAPANESE INTENTION ANSWER TO SOVIET (Reed. July 28. 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 27. A Tokio message says it is stated that tiie Japanese Minister, Admiral Yonai, is sending a new naval squadron to blockade the Russian section of Sakhalin in the style of the Tientsin campaign, following the rejection of the Japanese memorandum to the Soviet. The Tokio correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that the suggested blockade of the Russian part of Sakhalin is part of major developments to be expected as a result oi Russia’s rejection of Japan’s protest over the Soviet’s alleged ’hampering the working of the oil and coal concessions.
The dominant powers at Tokio feel the necessity for a large-scale demon-* stration in order to convince the public of their infallibility which so far has not been proved by the AngloJapanese negotiations or the warfare in Manchukuo.
The navy spokesman said that the new squadron was being put on a war footing immediately in readiness for emergencies and also to assure Japan’s domination of the Western Pacific, which was essential for her construction of the new Asia. He added that negotiations with the Soviet were at present proceeding, but the Japanese navy was determined to take the necessary measures to defend Japanese interests.
