DROUGHT AMD HEAT WAVE HUGE AREA AFFECTED TOTAL LOSS OF CROPS FOREST FIRES RAGING (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Rccd. July 28, S a.m.) NEW YORK, July 26. • Nine States, including New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with a quarter of the population of the nation and probably the largest proportion of mixed farming areas, are undergoing a heat wave with three months of drought exceeding records of 60 years. Irreparable damage has been done to crops and the milk supply has dropped seriously, due to lack of pasture and water supplies. Many communities are exhausted and forest fires are raging over wide areas, New York alone reporting over 40. Only heavy rain almost immedi'ately can save the area from almost total crop losses. The heat-ridden cities have been the scene of acute suffering with considerable loss of life, particularly through drowning. Beaches have been crowded with millions seeking relief. Ontario is similarly affected by heat and drought. Five children were drowned in the province.
