ELLIS’ EYE TROUBLE RECURRENCE SUFFERED SURVOV’S MISSION PROBABLY STEEPLECHASE By “Trenton” A message from Christchurch states that the jockey L. J. Ellis has suffered a recurrence of his eye trouble, and he will not be riding at the Christchurch Hunt meeting on Saturday. There is now a possibility that he will not go to Australia to ride Defaulter and in that case he will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. Has Raced Consistently The southern galloper Strip, by Vaikyrian from Dismantle, was freely discussed as a likely winner at the recent Wellington meeting, but his trip to Trentham was abandoned a few days before that meeting opened. Ar ’this gelding has only 31b. above the minimum in the Br.abazon Handicap, to be run over seven furlongs at the Christchurch Hunt Club meeting next Saturday, it will be interesting to see how he performs. In eight starts this season Strip has notched four wins and a third, his first success being in the Avonhead Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Grand National meeting last August. His final outing was in the Empire Handicap, six furlongs, at the Dunedin meeting in June, when he finished third to Fleet Street and Rebel Mate after being slow away. Strip will also contest sprint events at the Grand National meeting next month, and is worth keeping in mind. His Turn Will Come Captain Bruce was making his first appearance in the South Island when he finished third in the Pcmflow Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting last Saturday. It was also his first race for over two months, and in the circumstances his form was encouraging. The race should benefit Catpain Bruce considerably and his winning turn may not be far away. Predictions Were Wrong Prior to the Wellington meeting ,t was suggested that Survey would m.'Js the steeplechase and run in the Winter Hurdles, it being surmised that A E. Ellis would ride Padishah. Now it is, being hinted that Survey may be l eserved for the Grand National Hurdles. Some critics oven go so far as to say that Survoy is unlikely to master the steonlechase fences at Riccarton. Time will tell, but it is fairly certain that he will tackle them next month, with A. E. Ellis as his pilot. Winter Cun Candidates Niightealm, who is handicapped at 9.4 .in the Winter Cup, has 'raced consistently this season m sprint events, winning on five occasions over six furlongs. He has also shown ability up to a mile, running Trench Fight to a head over that distance in the Jockey Club Handicap at Iliccarton last November. The last win recorded by Night calm was at the Dunedin meeting in June, when he carried 9.7 and beat a good field, including Fleet . Street, to whom he was conceding 181 b., by a narrow margin. On that form Nightcalm will have to be considered in the Winter Cup. Manawatu Riders Riding engagements for the Mnnawe.lu Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday have been announced as under: W. J. Broughton.—Liberal’s Mini, Aurora’s Star, El Mcyncll, Colibil G. R. Tattersail. —Peach Kin;;, Fattyettc, Screen Star. B. H. Morris.—Old Surrey, /.■yty.-.s. Leigh. W. Jenkins. —Tidewaiter, Renascor.
