ANNUAL CLUB MEETING A LARGE ATTENDANCE NEW SEASON'S GAMES The 'annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Bawling Club last night atti acted an attendance of nearly 40 memoers. A ; t the commencement of the meeting, moti’caa of •ctond’olerJee were 'passed with the relatives of ; .he late Messrs. A. J. Plusher, W. W. Bridge and T. E. Toneycliffe, members who h:.;l died during the year, arid also ho late Mr. L. Redwood, .a foundation member who had resigned a few years ago. The retiring president, Mr. C. Blackburn, reported 'that the refreshments served resulted in a profit cf £3O. Subscriptions increased 'by £43 ss, out green fees were £l7 Tower. He aaded that the club should not have any extraordinary .expenditure during the year, now ’that the new mower Wad been purchased. iHe .commented on the good state of the green, and congratulated the greer.keeper, Mr. J. Douglas, on his Work. . Mr. A. Slight 'congratulated the cluo on the (balance sheet. iMr. Blackburn reported that the committee had 'endeavoured to decide on 'the most improved player during the season as the holder of the Taylor Rolph Pennant, but had been unable to do s'o, and the matter had been referred to 'the selectors, who had nominiated Mr. J. D. Hutchin. (Applause.) The presentation of trophies Was carried out to the following.—*Club Fours: A. Tome. F. Sell, R. Graham and G. 'Moore (s). Champion Pairs: S. •McKenzie and A. Slight. Champion Singles: A. Slight. Intermediate Pairs: T. Hay and W. Bury. Club Pairs: F. Elliot't and A. Y. Chapman. Intermediate Singles: J. Graham. Junior Singles: A. Torrie. Colts’ Singles: E. Simpson. Rusher Singles: A. Slight. Tayltor fß'olph Pennant, for most improved player: J. D. Hutchin. Election of Officers The following 'officers were elected unopposed: President, Mr. E. E. Somervell; vice-president, Mr. D. L. Ferguson.; treasurer, Mr. J. Strawbridge; secretary, Mr, J. J. Hartley; hon. auditor, !Mr. C. Blackburn; committee, Messrs. N. H. Shaw, F. Fredericks, H. Ritchie, F. T. Robinson, J. Buzza, F. Elliot and D. S. Thompson; selection committee, Messrs. A. Slight, H. Ritchie and H. Hopkinson; green superintendent, Mr. H. Hopkinson, press steward, Mr. T. Bayqliss. Mr. Slight withdrew h'is name from the domination's for the committee, in order to avbid an election, and the meeting decided to ptace on, record its appreciation of h'i!s 'service's as president and committeeman. A motion to pay an honorarium of £5 5s each year to the secretary was defeated on. -the chairman’s casting vote, Mr. Somervell, who had just taken the Chair, stating that although he favoured the motion he must give his Casting vote again,St a change in the existing arrangements, seeing that the voting was even. Mr. N. H. (Shaw was elected a life member, the president stating that Mr. Sh'aw Wad been secretary for a number of years and a very keen supporter of the club. .. ~ Mr. D. G. Rcbehtson spoke ex The great services given to the clulb by Mr. J. Graham during the pa'at year, and said tWat much credit Was due to him for his effort. The meeting decided to send the Rev. A. J. H. Tkiw a message wishing him a speedy recovery from 'his illness. Season’s Arrangements It was suggested that the club dhotfld hol'd a further general meeting in the last week in September to discuss matters of importance for the control of games during the coming season., but the motion was defeated. It was decided, however, to hold a half-yearly general meeting. It was decided to adopt the same system a's last year in the selection of the club fours by ballot, with the addition of the handicap system. The conduct of the champion pairs competition last season was discussed, Mr. D. G. Robertson claiming that the decision. : ait the previous annual meeting that the competition be decided cn. the two-life system had not been carried out. The secretary. Mr. D. J. Duncan, stated that 'the system adopted was ithe automatic two-life system. Which, he contended, was unfair and not as suitable as the scheme previously adopted. It • was decided to carry on during the coming season all the competitions that were listed l'a'st .year, ail club competitions to be played cci the automatic two-life system, with the exception 'of the club fours, club pairs and colts’ singles. Mr. Blackburn said that he donated trophic's fast year for What was then Called the President’s Handicap, and he offered to, donate a further set of trophies Ifor a similar Competition for the coming sealson. It was agreed that all club games should ibe put on a strict time limit, tWat the champion rinks should be selected as was done previously, and th'at the selection of skips should be done by the (selection committee .instead of by 'iballbt, (as in the past. A suggestion was received from the centre that a (tournament should be held among all clubs on September 23 and 30 and that entry fees should be donated to the centennial committee. The proposal was adopted. The club foprs competition, which la'st year wla's conducted on the ballot system, Was the subject of a keen debate. It was claimed by several members that, despite the work cf the committee 'to en'sure ithe success of the competition, interest slackened Off over the latter month's of the season. A suggestion that a series of fixed fours competitions shbuld be held with riot tnore .th'an four playing Saturdays was made by Mr. J. H. Walker. The proposal was Tost, but it was agreed to. hold a 'balldt'fours competition with handicaps on the same lines as last year.
