PENNY PER VOTE

CENTENNIAL QUEENS

CARNIVAL OPENED TO-DAY

DISTIN C IUI SHI N G CO LOURS

The Gisborne centennial queen carnival contest opened to-day, when tickets for the sale of votes were made available and the campaign announced to be officially commenced. The campaign will continue until September 30. A meeting of the Thirty Thousand Club's queen 'carnival committee was held last evening, when delegates of the various candidates’ committees were present. Mr. B. S. Bree presided. Among other matter's agreed on at the meeting was the allocation of distinguishing colours for the candidates, and these were decided upon as follows:

Public Service, Miss P. Lange, green. ■Maori people, Miss W. Tureia, gold. R.S.A., ’Miss P. Oakden, blue. Snorts, Miss NT. Henderson, red.

It was believed that at Id per vote, large numbers of tickets would bo sold, and if the committees made certain that a steady effort was made throughout the campaign with both small and larger sums, 'the response by the end of the period should be distinctly encouraging. A big combined function was arranged for the final night of voting, September 30. probably in the City Hall. On that occasion the candidates’ committee would be given an opportunity of making final appeals for support, and following the closing of the voting the carnival quota would be announced.
