PACIFIC AIR SERVICE
EARLY RESUMPTION NEW BASES READY CANTON IS EE AND NOUMEA (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The resumption of the trans-Pacific operations of Pan-American Airways early next month is indicated in a Press Association cable from San Francisco. The message stated that lhe company had announced that the inauguration of the air mail service from San Francisco to Australia would take place on August 15, and this is construed to mean the run between Son Francisco and Auckland. No confirmation of the message has been received by officials at Pan-Ame-rican Airways base at Mechanics’ Bay and aviation circles are at a loss to understand the reference to the service to Australia. The general interpretation is that the message refers to the resumption of flights to New Zealand and the subsequent despatch of Australian mails across the Tasman, either by steamer or by air. With the moorings and floats in position and the operations staff on duty, the Auckland base has been ready for some time to receive the new 74-passenger Boeing Clippers which it is proposed to use on the trans-Pacific run. The latest reports suggest that the newly-established base at Canton Island is now probably available for use, while it is ./also likely that work at Noumea in New Caledonia is equally well advanced As a result the stage is set for the early resumption of the service.
