OVERWHELMING VICTORY

WELLINGTON RUGBY TEAM ASHBURTON GOES DOWN UEIIRNS’ GOOD KICKING (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. For the first time in the. history of the game. Ashburton tried conclusions with Wellington in-a representative Rugby match at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon, and the result was an overwhelming victory for Wellington by 47 points to 14.

The tourists were at a disadvantage in being without the services of their captain and hooker, E. McKenzie, who had a hand badly injured at Wanganui. His place as leader was ably taken by Behrns, the full-back of the side, who was responsible for 11 of the 14 points scored by the southern team, as he kicked three penalty goals and converted the only try scored by the southerners.

The weather was fine but bitterly cold, with a fresh southerly breeze. Two thousand spectators enjoyed the bright display given by Wellington, whose backs were too fast for the opposition. and scored 1 almost at will, securing the ball from almost every scrum.

Tindill was in his best form at halfback and sent Ms backs away in repeated dashes at the line. Shcrratt made an auspicious first appearance 'or Wellington as wing-threoquartcr, In which position he scored four tries with .strong fending runs.

An interested spectator was Mr. E. vlcKenzie, of Carterton, the solo electoi for the New Zealand Rugby Union.
