SNOW BLOCKS ROADS

EASTERN SOUTHLAND DRIFTS IN CUTTING'S (Per Pres* Association.) GORE, this day. Deep snowdrifts have blocked many roads in Eastern Southland, disorganising the passenger bus and mail services. Stock losses might be fairly heavy after two days’ driving and drifting snow. Drifts in the cuttings several feet deep block the main Gore-Dune-din highway 10 miles north of Gore, while other deep drafts lie between Pukerau ancl Balclutha. A further four inches of snow covers yesterday’s frozen crust on the Gore Streets and light snow is still falling. School attendances are affected to such an extent that they will probably close to-morrow. At one school today, 305 pupils were absent from a roll of 520.
