COATS AND HATS TAKEN
SYNODSMEN ROBBED SPEEDY RECOVERY POLICE WORK PRAISED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. While Anglican clergy and churchmen were laying up treasure in heaven yesterday, thieves broke through and stole their hats and coats. During the afternoon session of the .Wellington diocesan synod at St. .Paulis school-room, Sydney street east, someone entered the lobby where the synodsmen had hung up their outer garments and removed a number of articles. Coats, hats and a scarf were missed when the synod adjourned at 5.30 p.m. for dinner. The police were communicated with. Shortly afterwards a. clergyman saw a man loitering near the school-room. The man entered the room where the coats and hats had been left.
The clergyman ishut the door and held it until the police arrived. However, the man was subsequently 'allowed to go.
Soon after the synod resumed, howover, the police arrived back at the school-room, bringing with them the missing, garments. Appropriately at the time the synod was watching the screening of a religious film dealing with the reformation by a clergyman of two burglars. "I should like to move a hearty vote of thanks tp the police for their reivnarkably quick work,” said the Rev. N. F. E. Robettshawe at the close of the session. The motion was carried •amid laughter.
