MUTTON RESTRICTIONS
PROPOSALS EXAMINED .MEAT BOARD ATTITUDE \0 PREMATURE DECISION (Special to Hie Ilornld.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Meat Board is at present thoroughly examining various proposals to meet the position brought about by the restrictions on the importation of mutton into the United Kingdom, according to a statement in the board s annual report. "It is inadvisable, however, to make a premature decision as to future action, which will depend upon a number of factors that cannot yet be fully determined,” the report added. "It is unfortunate for New Zealand that 1938 should have been taken as a basis for our quota for the calendar year 1939, as the unfavourable fattening season experienced in the 1937-38 season resulted in our tonnage of mutton and lamb landings in tae calendar year 1938 being lighter than it would otherwise have been. Furthermore, the 1938-39 season was late, and fewer new season s lambs than usual arrived Home beiore Deccmbei 31. 19313. This season, owing to drought conditions and other factors, our kill of mutton and lamb has be m particularly heavy.
"In regard to beef and veal, allocations made to date by the International Beef Conference have been in accordance with estimates furnished by the board and are considered adequate.
“The estimates supplied by the board during the year in respect to shipments of New Zealand porker and baconcr pigs to the United Kingdom have been accepted by the British Government.”
