COLLAPSE DURING FEAST
MASS MARRIAGE GUESTS HEAT AND SOFT DRINKS (Reed. July 25, 9 a.m.) MONTREAL, July 24. Three hundred of the celebrants and several of the newly-weds were admitted to hospitals as a result of the all-day festivity following yesterday’s mags marriage of 160 FrenohCanadian couples arranged by the Jocists, a young Roman Catholic workers’ movement, with the object of offsetting the unfavourable publicity given to marriage by divorce. The ceremony took place in the Montreal basketball stadium before 2500 witnesses. Those sent to hospitals began collapsing at 9 p.m. Poisoning being feared, a general alarm was broadcast for doctors and ambulances. The victims, some of whom were unconscious, were carried out of the stadium in a stream for an hour. The police commandeered cars and buses. The hospitals announced that they were searching desperately for the cause. Finally they discarded the theory of poisoning and diagnosed the trouble as due to heat and over indulgence in soft drinks. The victims were held overnight for observation.
