JILL OF ALL TRADES
RUNS ONE-(URL THEATRE Twenty-one-year-old Miss Joan Underwood, of Surbiton, Surrey, England, is actress, singer, pianist, electrician. scene painter, manageress, publicity manager, assistant producer, talent scout, and pay-box cashier. She runs and owns the only one-girl theatre in London, and it is a success. Not long ago her co-manager was taken ill. and sent to hospital, so now Miss Underwood has the full responsibility of her repertory theatre in Balham.
"My father, who is a theatre manager,” she said, “tried to stop me going into show business, but I couldn’t resist.”
“For three years I sang and danced in musical shows all over the country. “I then wanted to have my own theatre. I was due to come into a legacy when I came of age a few months ago, so I looked around, picked on the Balham Hippodrome which had not been doing very well, and invested my legacy in it. My father is one of the directors now.
