DRIFT INSHORE

STRANDED PORT BOWEN ANCHOR LINKS BROKEN SEAS BOUNDIN'!! VESSEL CARGO TO BE DUMPED (Tor Press Association.) WANGANUI, this day. During the nig-h-t two of the three lines .attached to mushroom l anchors’ holding the stranded vessel Port Bowen carried away and also the starboard anchor. The westerly wind since Saturday increased the sea and heavy breakers are now pounding the Port Bowen, sometimes rising as high as the bridge and sweeping the decks. The vessel appears to have drifted within 200 ft. of the shore. Because of the big sea it was impossible for the tugs to work to-day and no lightering work is being done. A gang of men taken out yesterday to assist in dumping coal is still aboard. The sea is too rough to allow bringing them in. Bearings taken by the pilot station indicate clearly that the vessel has moved ashore. As soon as the vessel can- be worked, it is proposed to dump the remainder of the cargo of wool and also the mutton.
