THIRTY-THOUSAND CLUB THIRD YEAR COMPLETED REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES “The Gisborne Thirty-Thousand Club was launched at a meeting held three years ago, when a large number of residents of Gisborne and the surrounding districts were good enough to wish -the new organisation every success. At that time a few pessimists' suggested that tire life of ihe club would toe possibly six months,” states the annual report of the Gisborne Thirty-Thousand Club, -prepared for submission to the annual general meeting to be held this evening. “To-day, all pessimism has vanished, and the people are standing solidly -behind the club’s activities, and helping in the principles of unity and progress. “The club successfully organised ladles’ inter-house sports in December last, and at -a recent public meeting it was -decided to request -tire club to carry on the future inter-house sports, which the club 1 agreed -to do. Physical fitness week was also .a function of public interest in which the club took an active part. The speed-boat sports held in March this year were also successful. Feature of the Year “A feature of the year was a visit to -the railway constructional works by tire committee at the invitation of tlie public works engineer, Mr. O. G. Thornton.
“Tlie club 'assisted the Returned Soldiers’ Association ‘to -inauguratle an annual New Year’s Eve public gathering at the Waikanae Beach last December, and success was proved by tlie record attendance.
“Steady progress has been made in: connection with publicity matter towards advertising the new tourist, road —the East Coast between Opotiki and- Gisborne.
“The Chinese residing in Gisborne provided a Chinese dragon, which has been in use for processions, and which is to be made a feature of the 1940 centennial celebration. “Favourable consideration has been received by the authorities regarding
the request to have the Welsh Guards Band visit Gisborne in 1940. Waikanae Park Improvements “Tlie outstanding improvements made at the Waikanae Park, and the club’s activities in the preparations for the centennial celebrations are the two most important features of the past year's work, but mention should be made of the financial assistance given to the centennial memorial, including the cost of improved lighting. “Among the special activities to be undertaken during the corning year will be the Waikanae Park improvement, centennial celebrations, beautification of the railway station grounds, marine drive west of Grey street, and the formulation of a scheme to improve the unsightly Waikanae Creek mudflats. “Finally, my committee desires to thank everyone who has so generously assisted the club during the past’ year by cash donations, gifts or personal help.”
