JOCKEY AWARDED £SO
DAMAGES AGAINST PAPER FAIR COMMENT EXCEEDED (Por Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A verdict that the expressions of opinion exceeded the limits of fair criticism, and an award of £SO damages to the plaintiff, was the finding of the jury which heard an action’’for libel brought by the Invercargill jockey, George Barclay, against the Evening Star Company. Barclav claimed £5Ol as damages, and the jury considered its verdict for one hour, reaching a conclusion that lho criticism was defamatory, that the facts on which the criticism was based were true, and that tire expression ot opinion exceeded fair comment. A motion for a new trial by counsel for the defendant was adjourned.
