WOODVILLE PIONEER

Mr. James Curry, of Woodville, who spent his firs’rt night in the then bush township in 1882, when he slept under a dray, celebrated his eighty-sixth birthday last week, and has the distinction of being the only surviving male pioneer of .that year now living in the borough. He was born in Ballymena, Belfas't, and following the death of his father the family came to New Zealand in 1869 in the ship Halcione, Mr. Curry then being nine years of age. He was first engaged in transport contracting work between Napier .and Taupo, and he after-wards took up a bush section at Woodville. His association with the dairy industry goes back to 1884, when? he became a shareholder in a small company.
