PENSION ARREARS

CONTROL OF PAYMENTS COAST CASE QUOTED (Special to the Herald.) TE PUIA, this day. Payments of large sums of money to pensioners, -who 'were eligible to collect arrears that had accrued, were deprecated by members of the Waiapu Hospital Board, when the matter was discussed at the annual meeting.

A case was quoted of a Maori who had been granted a pension after a lapse of some months. The whole of the arrears had been paid to him in one sum. Members were o:f the opinion that this was an unwise procedure. It was decided to send a letter to the authorities recommending thal such large payments of -pension moneys should be controlled by some responsible person in order to assure that the money was not squandered.
