GNAWED BY RATS
Investigation of a fault that had developed in the telephone service between Napier and Hastings led to the discovery that portions of the lead sheathing on the telephone cable carried beneath the decking of the Waitangi bridge had been gnawed through by rats. The sheathing, which was three-sixteenths of an inch thick, bore distinct evidences of the teeth of rats, some clean cuts up to half an inch in length being visible.
