STRIKING IMPROVEMENT
BRITISH SHIPBUILDING INCREASE IN ORDERS (British Official Wireless.) Reed. !) a.m. RUGBY, July 13. A striking improvement in British shipbuilding is shown in the latest Lloyd’s Register. The figures cover the three months which have passed since the Government announced its plans lor the assistance of merchant shipping and reflect the very large volume of orders for new tonnage placed during that period. The returns show that at the end of June there was a total of 791,455 tons under construction in British shipyards, representing an advance of 194,552 tons or nearly 25 per cent, compared with the previous quarter. By contrast, the tonnage building in other countries showed a decline of 38,929. The total tonnage under construction in the world at the end of June amounted to 2,859,292 tons, of which Britain’s share was 27.7 per cent.
