KING COUNTRY POSITION TRILL OPPOSES LICENSES The granting of liquor licenses to he King Country was opposed at a meeting of the Maniapoto tribe at. the fc Ivuiti Pa. and a motion was carried unanimously, that there should oc a -Still erring of the law in connection with the introduction of liquor .rue the King Country. It was suggested that the consigning of liquor into itih-is area should be stopped altogether'. The position was fully debated into ihe early hours of the morning. The speakers were mainly the older leaders of the tribe, who were very concerned over the amount of publicity which had been given to this question. They did not desire the relaxing of the present restrictions. While deploring the amount of drinkr.g among the Maori people, they - ( ,i.« r’.cred that the position would not be relieved by the licensing ol betels H was stated that arrests for drunkenness were not so numerous in he King Country as in* licensed areas.
