QUALITY BIRDS ON EXHIBITION
HIGH STANDARD EQUAL TO N.Z. BEST OUTSTANDING- CLASSES ENTRIES ALMvI-j RECORD ANNUAL POULTRY SHOW' Praise for the very high standard of bird exhibited was a feature of the comments of the judges of all classes at the twenty-sixth show of the Poverty Bay Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Association, which is being held in the City Hail. The show tins year is being held in conjunction with the Poverty Bay Budgerigar and Cage Bird Club and has attracted entries which constitute a North Island record. In ooening the show yesterday
afternoon, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. IT. Hall, offered his congratulations to the hard-working band of officials, to whom all credit for so successful a fixture was due. Mr. Hall paid a avji.ue to tite work cf such associations as those conducting the show in improving the standard of breeding cf poultry and cage .birds, pointing out trat their success in efforts along these lines was reflected in the splendid number of entries received and in. the quality of: the exhibits. Game Bird Section Discussing the game bird section, the judge, Mr. T. Crosby, said that tile entry was 100 per cent better than that of last year and the quality of th c birds correspondingly high. The champion bird in this class, penned by Mr. T. Prince, was one of the best birds of this type the judge had seen and would score well in any outside show. The standard set by the exhibitors was very high, and the birds were equal to anything which could be displayed anywhere in the Dominion. The Bantams, which were judged by Mr. W. ITadwen, were said by the judge to be of a gratifying high standard .the black-ibreasted red.class being one of the best the official had seen for several years. Winners in this section of the show, by reason of the even quality of the entry, had been very difficult to select. Spangled typos had been outstanding, the entry of cockerels in this class being a very line one. Birds in the modern game class had not been shown for several
years and it was pleasing to see on exhibition birds which were so rare in New Zealand. Entries in the children’s classes had been good and of a better standard than last year, while black Rosecoffibs had been of good quality. Outstanding' Jacobin Pigeon Commenting on the fancy pigeons, Mr. C. Melville, Fordell, expressed admiration of the White Jacobin exhibited by Mr. C. L. Fogden, this bird, in the opinion of the judge, being one of the best of its category in New Zealand. Jacobins were imported birds and it was difficult to get an infusion of new breeding blood due to the livestock embargo. The Jacobins were an English breed and could be brought into the .country only after a period spent in a country where there was no foot-and-mouth disease. A pleasing feature of ihe class was the manner in which the 1338 birds' had come on. same of those being better than their parent birds. In the opinion of the judge. Mr. H. 11. Melville, Fordell. birds shown in the homing pigeon classes reflected great credit on their breeders, the quality being high and the competition keen The best bird in these classes had been equal to anything the official had seen at other shows this year. The association was to be congratulated on the excellent benching arrangements for the birds, t'n.s leaving little to be desired.
Cage Birds A greater variety of birds and moie ■classy exhibits were features of tire cage bird section, commented the judge, Mr. Robert Forster, Hastings, in comparing the Poverty n, Bay Budgerigar and Cage Bird Society s show with last year’s effort, at which he had officiated in a similar capacity. “The budgerigars formed the outstanding, display in the section, while Ihe foreign birds, too, were a particularly fine collection,” said Mr. Forster, who also praised the work of the officials and the excellent manner m which the birds were benched. Speaking of outside shows, Mr. Forster said that neither Hastings nor Napier cage bird shows came up to the Gisborne effort. He doubted whether Napier and Hastings combined could stage a display equal m size and standard of exhibits to that which he had judged at the City Hall.
