BOYS’ BRIGADE
CENTENNIAL CAMP GISBORNE BATTALION The Dominion executive of the Boys’ Brigade has embarked upon a big enterprise in a large combined Dominion camp near Wellington as the brigade’s contribution to the Dominion’s centenary celebrations.
The camp will officially open cn January 5, 1940, and will close on January 15. It is expected that between 400 and 500 boys and officers will be gathered together under canvas at Waikanae during that period, and extensive preparations are well in hand to make the camp an outstand- : ing success. Several excursions will be made to | the Exhibition by special trains, and ; arrangements also are being made to | accommodate boys in Wellington after ! tlie camp concludes, to give them the j opportunity of the maximum amount of sightseeing. Contingents are expected from overseas.
A small contingent from the Gisborne companies will be present at the camp. Strength In Gisborne In 1934, the. first company was started in this district as the Ist Gisborne. A few years later tile 2nd Gisborne began, -followed by companies at Waerenga-a-hika, Patutahi, Wairoa, Manuluke and Muriwai, the two last-mentioned being Maori companies talcing the name of Ist and 2nd Turanga. To-day there are eight companies, with nearly 150 boys. The companies of the district are united in the Gisborne Battalion, and its interests are fostered by the officers, formed into the Gisborne Battalion Council.
