REGENT THEATRE

LAST DAY: “FOUR’S A .CROWD." Errol Flynn, Olivia De Havilland. Rosalind Russell and Patric Knowles star in “Four’s A Crowd, which will be screened for the last time this evening. —Friday: Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell in “Fast and Loose”— Where comedy and romance mingle Robert Montgomery is in his element, but it is doubtful if he has ever bben seen to better advantage as an entertainer than in “Fast and Loose." which opens its season .in Gisborne at the Regent Theatre to-morrow. The picture is a combination ol mystery, melodrama, comedy and romance on lines which have become immensely popular as the direct descendant of the spy story, and harks back in it.s style and appeal t'o the adventurous romances of Anthony Hope. A dashing companion to Montgomery is Rosalind Russell, and in carrying on the adventures ol Joel and Garda Sloane, which Melvyn Douglas and Florence Rice made notable among picture-goers in "Fast Company," they provide an entertainment that eclipses its predecessor. It is entertainment that appeals strongly to every section of the audience. One great feature of “Fast and Loose" is the facile and effective manner in which all members of the cast come naturally into momentary highlights of mystery, comedy, thrill and romance to carry the story along with a convincing and impressive swing. Even the most hardened cynics get. caughl up in the thrill and attraction of it.s highspeed action, which rivals the "Thin Man" series in its power to satisfy the average man’s appetite .for the kind of mental enjoyment provided by thrilling stories. Montgomery and Miss Russell appeal as a natural team for swinging the frolic along in a high, wide and handsome fashion, and their lead in tins inspect is strongly supported. Involved in mystery, murder and the chase ot criminals, with side issues of love and high jinks, the cast of "Fast and Loose” provide a happy and fascinating hour of priceless entertainment. The sleuthing adventures of the Sloanes on this occasion relate to the search for a rare and valuable manuscript, whose disappearance and eventual rccoveiv 1 suit in the disclosure of dirty work at the crossroads and murder in high places. At a moment of gi'eat tension the heroine flashes a revolver and, with the customary indirection of women, shoots the wrong man. bn.she gets her man eventually—also m the way of women. The supporting programme, too. is one ol the most interesting character, including notable news, .spectacular and educative features. To those of sporting inclinations the picture of Hie Australian life saving team in training with surfboat, surfboard and reel, for the trio to Honolulu, 3.nd n spcctacular diving exhibition at the New York’s World Fair has a special appeal. Once again Fitzpatricks travel talk, this time on the subject of "Imperial Delhi," should evoke spontaneous applause for its beauty and the aptness of the selected suojef't matter. The criminal side o! money-lending under American conditions a.lso provides New Zeahmdro" with aimed incredible "eveia!ions, and a Captain and Kids cannon gives the audience a side-solitting farcical interlude. To complete _ a wonderful programme the latest film of the King and Queen in the United States will he shown.
