EXTRAVAGANCE ASSAILED

SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY

WORK ON TRUNK LINE (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. “The South Island main trunk railway is a No. 1 extravagance,” announced Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Ind., Egmont) when he commenced in the House of Representatives to deal with what ,he termed the Government’s spendthrift policy. Most ol its public works were unproductive and to spend more money on this particular work was a disaster to the country. No man living had ever said it would pay, but without any preliminary investigation or report the Government went on with this railway, lor which New Zealand would have to pay millions, said Mr. Wilkinson.
