AID IN DEFENCE PLANS
PROSPECTING FOR OIL NEW ZEALAND RESOURCES (I'arliarnentniy Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this clay. An important service which would enable New Zealand to prepare against war. said Dr D. G. McMillan (Lab., Dunedin West) in the House of Representatives last night, was the encouragement it gave to the large oil companies iO adequately prospect the Dominion for oils. As this was so vital a need in defence, he would like the Government also to Investigate thoroughly the shale deposits in Southland. The House had heard almost as much cvf them as of the iron ore deposits of Golden Bay. It now had been discovered that ore was not there in the quantity supposed. If shale could be worked on an economical basis, it would be a valuable adjunct to the country’s .resources, but he would be soiiy to see investors encouraged to put theii savings into this industry without a thorough investigation of its economic possibilities.
