COUNCIL BY-ELECTION ANTI-LABOUR SUCCESS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A poll of more than GO per cent of ‘lie electors of the east ward of the Upper llutt Borough Council election Mr. ,1. Purvis as their representative on the council at a by-election yes terday. The vacancy occurred through the election of Cr. J. Blewmart to the Mayoralty, following the death of the Mayor, Mr. Peter Robertson. Details, of the voting were: —- ,J. Purvis (Anti-Labour) .. G7G O. .1. Plummer (Labour) .. GO7 Informal 2 Majority for Purvis .. G 9 In an interview last night, Mr. Purvis stresed that he was definitely an “anti-Labour” candidate. The Upper Hutt BoVough Council will now have three Labour members and a Labour Mayor, and five members classing themselves- as independents, or supporters of political ini’, rests other than Labour.
