ORDERS REFUSED

TIN AND LEAD SUPPLIES

AUCKLAND FIRMS AUSTRALIAN ACTION FUNDS NOT AVAILABLE (Pur i’ivss Aosocialion.) AUCKLAND, this day. Because the necessary exchange funds for paymen* are not at present available, a large Australian supplier of tin and lead has notified Auckland merchants and manufacturers that, m the meantime, it is not prepared iO accept orders. Grave concern is expressed at the announcement, for although another source of supply still appears open, the industry uses metals in such large quantities that difficulties arising from the restricted supply are considered inevitable. It is pointed out by the manufacturers that at this period "of the season farmers’ milk cans are received m large numbers for re-tinning, the regulations requiring that containers must be in good order. The situation is likely to embarrass the farmer unless it is speedily relieved. Meat works are also large users of tin for canning. The refusal by the Australian supplier to ship both lead and tin affects the manufacture of solder and wiping metal. Manufactured solder cannot now be imported into the Dominion under the ban imposed by the import restriction regulations. The Auckland industry is a very large user of solder, many tons of lead and tin being imported each month for its manufacture.
