ISLAND ARSENAL

STRATEGIC POSITION FORTIFIC AT lON 11V X AXIS DANZIG, July 5. The little island c*f Holm, in the estuary of the Vistula, has been declared a closed area, presumably for its fortification and conversion into an arsenal. The island occupies a strategic position opposite the Sehichau .shipbuilding yards, where further arms and munitions have been landed, and where many workers have been dismissed because of doubt as to their Nazi sympathies. The young men who have swarmed in from East Prussia fall into three classes: Firstly, 4UO Storm Troopers; secondly, a much larger number of Danzigers, who have been trained 1 militarily in the Reich; and thirdly, Reich Labour Service men. These, with the .increased police force total between 10,000 and 11,000 armed men in. the territory, which has a population of 415,000.

War material, which has been brought in chiefly in darkness, across the East Prussian frontier, or which has been landed in the harbour, appears to comprise several batteries of artillery and also machine-guns-and a few light tanks.

This equipment is mostly being assembled near the Polish frontier in a rudimentarily fortified line.
