BANNERS IN MAIN STREET
DEPARTMENT’S STAND \ PERMISSION WITHDRAWN NOT ON ’PHONE POLES The Post and Telegraph Department has taken a stand against the affixing of 'banner ropes to its poles, and as a result one body in Gisborne has given up the idea of erecting a banner, after receiving permission from the Gisborne Borough Council to do so. This was mentioned at last night’s meeting of the council, when the towm clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, stated that at the previous meeting the Poverty Bay Poultry, Pigeon sad Cage Bird Association had been given permission by the council to erect a banner, but the association could not secure the permission of the P. and T. Department to affix it to any of its poles.
The .permission of the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board had been obtained to affix one end to a power pole, Mr. Jenkins added, but on the other side of the street the pole belonged to the P. and T. Department. The association, therefore, had decided act to proceed further with the proposed erection of the banner. The Wrestling Association had affixed one end cf its banner to the verandah of the Coronation Hotel, but this might be dangerous in a gale. Permission was granted by the council to the Repertory Society to erect a banner, the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., stating that it was not the council’s concern whether arrangements could toe made with the owners of the poles. Protest By Chamber A protest against permission to erect banners in the main street, except in certain circumstances, was submitted from the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. “Members expressed strong disapproval cf certain advertising by means of a banner that has recently been permitted bv the council in Gladstone road." a letter from the chamber stated. “Members of this chamber view' very unfavourably any commercial advertising by means of a banner being allowed in. our main street. Members approve of certain local and charitable institutions using this means of advertising, but do not consider that it should be" allowed for commercial purposes.” The letter w T as received.
