State and Awards

Sir,— “Chips” letter shows very clearly how the Government has been ignoring the provisions of court awards in contracts for State building. The other Government departments consider themselves -to be beyond the duty of complying with awards also. The basic wage, 100, docs not apply to the Government. Clerical employees and others get much less in many Government departments than the basic wage. Apparently the Government has one standard of duty for itself and another for the general public. If the Socialist state is ever realised, it is interesting to consider whether all of us will not then be worse off, for there will be no private employers and the State will be able to underpay us all. SAWBONES.
