STATE HOUSING PATHS

NO GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY , DEBARRED BY ACT DEDICATED STH CUTS No contribution towards the cost of bituminising footpaths fronting the State houses in Childers and Stanley roads is to be provided by the Housing Department. j This intimation was placed before ! the Borough Council at its meeting last night in a letter from the Director : of Housing Construction, in reply ‘o . a communication from the council fol- 1 lowing the receipt of a request from the State House Tenants’ Association. “Although it is recognised that the tenants must be suffering considerable inconvenience 1 from the want of a proper footpath,” the letter from the \ director stated, “I much regret that ! the department cannot contribute 1 towards the cost. The provisions of the Housing Act debar the expenditure of money by this department on dedicated streets. Notwithstanding this difficulty, I trust that your council can give improved access to the tenants whose houses front on these dedicated streets.” The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that the council would have to provide a footpath, but it would not be of bitumen, for there were other parts of the borough of longer standing as a residential area where there was no bitumen path.
