DEMOCRACIES DERIDED

SPANISH MINISTER UNITY WITH ITALY ROME, June 9. A tirade against the democracies was delivered by the Spanish Minister for the Interior, Senor Suner, at a banquet which Signor Mussolini gave in his honour at the Palazzo Venezia. Senor Suner described the democracies as “nations which claim to be civilised, but which looked on while our brothers were being massacred in the streets of Madrid.” “These nations had gold, which allowed them to deafen the world with lies so that the truth about Spam should not be heard,” lie said. “W e have the right, and _ the duty, to tell those who committed this outrage on us that they deserve to be called common slanderers.” These wbrds, coupled with Senor Suner’s hope that Italy and Spain would unite in future to serve a great common destiny, were balm to Fascist ears.

The speech made a most favourable impression and is regarded as a guarantee that Spain can surely be relied upon as an ally. Senor Suner‘will leave here for Madrid next week to report on the Italian proposals to link up Spain with the Rome-Berlin Axis on the lines of the Italo-German military alliance.

It is understood that Senor Suner has already been won over in favour of joining the alliance.
