ANTARCTIC TERRITORY

CLAIMS OF AMERICA ANSWER TO NAZI MOVE (Reed. July 10. 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 7. With reference to the forthcoming Antarctic expedition, Administration officials state that once Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd has established bases, the Government will be prepared to take the stand that any attempt by foreign Powers to establish bases west of the 190th meridian would be an unfriendly act.

Officials have confirmed that the United States move is largely the result of Germany’s plan to send an expedition this summer into the area claimed by America. The Nazis have already claimed 250,000 square miles adjoining the United Slates sector. Part extends beyond the 180th meridian, but the United States regards this as of insufficient size and importance to warrant controversy.
