AWARD DEMANDS
EXTRAVAGANCE ALLEGED CRITICISM OF UNION The unions were showing a complete disregard of the national and indust rial need for increased production and improvements in costs and real wages, said the secretary of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association, Mr. A. W. Nisbet, at a special meeting of the association Mr. Nisbet commented on artificial disputes created by workers' union secretaries, and referred to the appeal by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, urging the workers to co-operate in increasing production and stabilising costs and lo “go easy with their claims" in the immediate future. Mr. Nisbet said that although the appeal had been, endorsed by the Prime Minister, the Rl. Hon. M. J. Savage, and the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, extravagant claims were still being received, and the association was taking up the attitude that the lime had arrived for tlie cessation of increased wages and conditions whenever a dispute came up for hearing.
