GISBORNE TEAM’S SUCCESS MERCANTILE VISIT NAPIER (Special to die lleralil.) NAPIER, this day. Gisborne Mercantile were successful in defeating Napier United on Nelson Park on Saturday, in then* annual encounter for the Mercantile Trophy, by four goals to two. The grounds were ideal tor soccer. Defeated by a better team. United were forced to haul down their colours to Gisborne Mercantile after a struggle in which the visiting team showed a superiority right throughout. The visiting forwards were particularly quick on their feet, and time after time out-manoeuvred the United front line.
United, however, appeared to be somewhat at a loss without their star centre-forward, J. Vannan, who was not able to play owing to a slight injury received a few weeks ago. Half-time saw Mercantile in the lead by two goals to nil, and early in the second spell excitement ran high when United evened with two fine goals by Heath, who was playing good soccer. However, it transspired that United had then seen the last of the Mercantile net, as the visitors soon scored two more goals to put the issue beyond doubt. The final whistle saw hard and fast play ensuing in midfield.
The scorers for Mercantile were A. Waugh, (2), W. McGrory and J. Dunmore, while J. Heath scored the two goals for United. The final score was: —Mercantile 4, United 2.
